Local news... Litton Parish Trees

Recently, Litton Parish Council has successfully completed two phases of a phased programme of tree maintenance, which had been 50% funded by the Friends of Litton Village, to prune and thin the trees on the green and those nearby the centre of the village.

The donation raised by local projects through a network of volunteers allowed the work to be undertaken sooner than would have otherwise been possible and we hope residents and visitors will soon see a difference as we move towards summer. Further work is being scheduled to take place, in the near future.

If you are one of the few who benefited from the logs resulting from the recent work, would you be willing to make a contribution to assist with the cost of future maintenance? Donations can be made through the Parish Council who would welcome your support. Donations can be sent to The Parish Clerk, Litton Parish Council

Ms Gill Turner

Address:

Rockingham Lodge
Market Square
Tideswell
Buxton
SK17 8LQ

As an organisation The Friends of Litton Village raise funds to benefit deserving causes and with the future phases it would be good to see the distribution of logs to benefit as many local, and especially our elderly residents, as is possible.

Local news... Cressbrook Film club – May issue VV

Hi Pete Hawkins,
Here’s the text for our next film at Cressbrook Film Club to appear in the May issue of Village Voice. Our last film of the season and a minor panic as all the films we wanted ie Oscar winners, arent being released til next month!! But the film we’ve chosen is really funny and dont think I’ve seen it shown anywhere round here.
Regards,
Carole Perks 01298 871 451

CRESSBROOK FILM CLUB
Friday 4th May
THE DEATH OF STALIN (cert 15, 107mins)
This film is a wonderful, hilarious black comedy from writer/director Armando Ianucci (The Thick of It,  Veep,  W1A) with a great cast including Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin and Simon Russell Beale playing some of the most notorious figures of the day. On March 2nd 1953 the dictator of the Soviet Union for 30 years Joseph Stalin, suffered a stroke and died plunging his team of ministers into a few days of madness, insane paranoia, farcical plotting and ruthless backstabbing – all of them tussling for control. Dont expect good taste, it’s black humour taken to a mad level.  This film is banned from viewing in Russia – Stalin has always been Putin’s great hero! Doors open 7.30 for 8pm and the bar will be open for refreshments before and after the film. Guest tickets available at £5-00 per film for adults and £3 for kids. Contact Carole on 01298 871 451 to book guest tickets in advance and as ever, there’s a warm welcome for old and new members and guests.

Marshalls
Thank you everyone who helped us last year to marshal, as any local already knows, wakes week simply can’t happen without without a team of willing and reliable volunteers who help us to put on fun, enjoyable but above all safe events. One of the key volunteers roles is that of a marshal. Volunteer marshals are required for all the main events throughout the week that require a temporary road closure. Although we have a good number on the committee, not all of us can be used as marshals for each event. As a volunteer marshal we ask for a couple of hours of your time to help us runt the events and keep it safe for everyone taking part. You will be fully briefed before each event by the head marshal and key personnel supervising the event, you will be two way radio contact with two way radios, if you need assistance is needed it can be summoned quickly, as a volunteer marshal you will be given a hi vis jacket so you can be identified and reinforce your role as a key member of the safety team. Due to the nature of the role we can only accept people aged 18 years and over, if you are nearly 18 years of age and would like to help as a marshal please speak to a member of the wakes committee
If you are willing to put your name forward for one or more events please email myself at jobot79 [at] icloud [dot] com or phone 07730043646 by 15th May. In addition, if you know of anyone who also may be willing to help us, please pass on this email.
Thanks in advance.

Carnival Floats
We’re really hoping many of you have already caught the Tidza Wakes ‘bug’ and are planning house or street decorations, fancy dress costume or the theme of your float for the Carnival Parade! Our aim is to make Wakes enjoyable and fun but also safe for everyone involved or spectating, particularly the Carnival Parade on Saturday 30th June which relies on brightly decorated floats, fancy dress costumes, musical accompaniment and Bands to give it the WOW factor. But here comes the important bit…….with growing interest from people entering floats in the Carnival, the Committee needs everyone entering a float to register before 5 pm on Friday 29th June. Then we can pre-plan the procession, reduce waiting and make sure the procession showcases both floats and Bands. It may not be possible to include floats in the Parade that have not registered in advance. When you register we will need basic details such as the type of vehicle, the theme, whether it will have music playing on the float and insurance. We cannot insure vehicle owners against a motor accident that occurs during the Parade, whilst a motor accident is an unlikely event and our insurance covers all other types of accidents or damage, we need you to inform your vehicle insurer that you intend to use the vehicle as a float so you have the correct cover on Carnival Day. If this is unwelcome news, please, please DON’T abandon your plans but DO get in contact with the Committee to discuss your concerns, we can’t solve every issue but would like the opportunity to try! To register your float, please contact Andrew on andrew [at] tideswellwakes [dot] info or see any member of the team before 5 pm on Friday 29th June.

Local news... Tidza Ramblers

Tidza Ramblers After a spell of bad weather we weren’t certain whether Cressbrook band would be playing on Friday Rock but fortunately the day dawned fine. An anxious moment occurred soon after setting off towards Tideswell Dale when one of us, already with a broken wrist, slipped in thick mud but luckily no further damage was done. Having dallied too long over a coffee break in the picnic area by Litton Mill we hadn’t left enough time to get to the village before the band began at noon but in the event this proved to our benefit. It is a trudge up the hill to the green but on this occasion the strains of Stand Up ! stand up for Jesus made dawdling impossible. ‘ The music floats down from high ‘ describes perfectly this unique experience. ( Not my words but likely those of a Cressbrook resident or band member. ) The array of hot homemade food in the club afterwards is always mouthwatering. Cakes were equally tempting and the fruit crumble was delicious. We were able to fully appreciate our surroundings on one of the first reasonable days of the year. We smiled at the sight of a lamb sitting most comfortably on its mother’s back on the stroll back from Litton. Helen Royle.

Local news... Christian Aid

The Big Brekkie Join us for a sumptuous breakfast in St John’s Institute on Saturday 12th May, 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. No need to book, just turn up for bacon butties, croissants, cereals, yoghurts, cake and much much more. This is our village launch of Christian Aid Week, and has returned by popular demand! All donations will be added to our street collection total, which last year raised nearly £2,800 to help work in some of the world’s poorest communities.
The Christian Aid red envelope should appear through your letter box soon after that, and local volunteers will arrive later to see if you would like to contribute something to this year’s appeal. The focus for 2018 is the aftermath of the earthquake and hurricane that have devastated life in recent years in Haiti, with recovery work still ongoing. It is long out of our news, but people are still rebuilding their ruined lives. What is encouraging is that the homes that Christian Aid helped to construct after the earthquake withstood the power of the hurricane, when other buildings crumbled. One Haitian woman, Vilia, whose home survived was able to give shelter to over fifty of her neighbours. She is incredibly grateful for the help she has received from Christian Aid supporters, but she knows that many in her neighbourhood are struggling. The theme of the Week is ‘TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER THAN THE STORMS’. Storms, of all kinds, can be devastating, but working together can make all the difference. Putting something in that red envelope is part of that. Please consider what you are able to do. Margaret and Vic Filer Village organisers for Christian Aid Week

Local news... Article for publication

Musical Sheffield
Tideswell Local History Club was entertained recently by Scott Russell giving us a musical snapshot of working life in old Sheffield. When we visited the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in 2017, it was Scott who took us round – explaining to us all the processes of scythe making from smelting the steel to grinding the blades. He then surprised us by breaking into song and such was our appreciation of this tune – The Jolly Grinder, that we invited him to come to Tideswell and sing for us again.
Before singing, Scott explained to us the history of the edge tool manufacturers in the region. Sheffield was well blessed during the Industrial Revolution in having ample deposits of coal, gannister and clay together with sandstone quarries where they could fashion their grindstones. In the very early days their greatest asset was water, which was needed to power their grinding hulls. As we know from the huge floods of a few years ago, Sheffield has a very large catchment area, which feeds the five rivers running into the city. In 1770 there were the colossal number of 133 water-powered workshops in the region, which was all well and good until they had prolonged summer droughts, which led to the loss of orders, unemployment and hunger. By 1850 most of the factories were powered by steam using reliable stocks of coal. Sheffield then became a much more unhealthy place to live with a forest of tall chimneys belching out smoke, soots, and sulphur etc. The art critic John Ruskin described the city as the “Dirty picture in the Golden Frame” (referring to the surrounding glorious countryside).
Scott’s songs mostly related to the cutlery and edge tool workers who sat straddled across a short bench called a “Horsing” with the belt driven grindstone just in front of him. He bent forward and pressed his steel piece on to the revolving stone and as he sharpened the edge there would be fine particles of steel and stone flying up into his face – a very unhealthy job indeed. The average life expectancy for these operators was only about 33 years and for the fork grinders who ground dry it was only 29 years – possibly caused by “grinders’ asthma”. One operator whose chest measurement was 32 inches could only manage a chest expansion to 33 inches!
Scott also dealt with the lighter side of their lives by singing about their social habits and the celebrating of “Saint Monday” (when the carousing of the weekend stretched right over into a “holiday” on the first day of the working week). Scott’s excellent singing concluded our programme for this season. Do join us again on the second Thursday in November for a bit more local culture, and our thanks go to our speaker finders – June and Tony for an excellent season’s programme in 2017/18.

Local news... Next edition

Please could you put the following article in the next edition – separate from the normal Community Association page if possible
TIDESWELL & DISTRICT COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION – ADDITIONAL DEFIBRILLATORS
The community Association has provided a defibrillator for use in emergencies which is currently sited outside the Co-op. In view of the need to have the machines situated close to any emergency it has been suggested that more of these potential life savers are needed on other sites in the village. To do this the Community Association has started a fund to raise the money to purchase what is needed. Any group, organisation or individual who would like to contribute can do so through the Treasurer, Alan Brignell at 9 Commercial Road Tideswell or simply make a donation to any committee member.
Please help us to give wider emergency cover to people in the village that will hopefully save lives. We will keep you up to date with fund raising progress on our website – www.tideswell-dca.co.uk
Thank you

Local news... Tideswell Surgery’s Newsletter

Hello,
Please find Tideswell Surgery’s newsletter below. If this could be put into the next edition and the invoice sent to Carol Lacey at tideswell Surgery.
Many thanks,

TIDESWELL SURGERY’S NEWSLETTER MARCH 2018
DID NOT ATTEND APPOINTMENTS From the 1st January 2018 until the 19th March 2018, we have had 22 GP appointments DNA’d which is 3 hours 40 minutes worth! 50 Nurse/HCA appointments which is a massive 8 hours 20 minutes DNA’d! We ask that is you cannot attend an appointment please cancel your appointment so that it can be offered to someone else. Car Park If you park your car in the surgery car park when the surgery is closed, please could we ask you to move it by 8am in the morning for the surgery opening, and do not park it up until after 6.30pm when the surgery is closed. The car parking spaces need to be kept free throughout the day for patients with appointments or collecting medication etc… With the limited number of spaces in the car park, we ask that if you are able to walk to the surgery it will benefit your health and relieve the parking spaces for people who need to drive. Thanks for your understanding. We need access to the surgery at all times for emergency, ambulances etc… Next of Kin We try to keep your records up to date with important and relevant information. Your next of kin details are very important to us and the hospitals. If you would like to provide us with NOK details please contact the surgery and we can update your records. In the case of an emergency these details are VERY important. Samples If you need to bring a sample in for sending off to the hospital for testing, please make sure it is:
* In the correct sample pot from the surgery
* It is labelled with a printed sticker with the correct date of sample
* The sample is dropped off before 2pm any day. We cannot accept samples after 2pm as this is the last collection from Chesterfield Hospital. Call back from the Doctor If you require a phone call from the doctor, when they ring it will show WITH HELD or UNKNOWN on your phone. Please bear this in mind when you have asked for a call.
Dr Parry Dr Parry is now back from maternity leave and will be working her usual days, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursday Mornings. We will also be saying goodbye to Dr Courtier and welcoming a new F2 doctor, Christina Triantafyllou. She will be starting on the 4th April for 4 months. Collecting Medications Please be aware when you are collecting prescriptions or ordering prescriptions for someone else you will need to know their date of birth and first line of their address. We have to ask 3 patient identifiers for each patient for everything, making appointments, ordering prescriptions etc… System-online If you didn’t already know you can register for the online service which allows you make your own appointments and order prescriptions! If you would like to have access to this, please ask at reception with some form of photo ID Mobile Numbers Please keep all your contact details up to date. We send text message reminders for booked appointments and can also text you if needed. Ordering Prescription When ordering your prescriptions please only order what your need. Try not to build up a lot of your tablets for your safety. There is a huge amount of waste with prescriptions in the NHS, and once you have collected your tablets we cannot re-use them we have to dispose of them. Even if you haven’t opened the box! Appointments When booking an appointment, you may be asked what the appointment is for. This is so we can direct to the right clinician and allocate enough time for your appointment. Holiday Vaccinations If you are going away this year and think you need any vaccinations, they can be done with us here! You will need to collect a Travel Questionnaire from reception and fill this in for the Practice Nurse. You will then need to book a 20 minute appointment with either Karen, Greta or Clare. Please don’t leave this to the last minute, some vaccinations have to be done a few weeks before you go away. And please bear in mind the nurses are very busy and get booked up quickly. So trying to squeeze an appointment with them last minute is very tricky!
Pharmacist We have welcomed Richard Clarey to the team. He is a Pharmacist who is working at both sites of Peak & Dales Partnership. He qualified as a Pharmacist in 1992 and has worked in both High Street Pharmacy and in Industry, spending the past 16 years working in primary care. He was initially based at Newholme Hospital covering the High Peak and Dales practices before working as a Pharmacist for a practice in Whaley Bridge, where his roles were varied, assisting with medication queries, helping with discharge queries, reviewing results and seeing patients in clinics. Richard is able to do medication reviews, and helping out with medication queries were possible.

Local news... Item for May please

Hi Pete,I am the publicity person for Bamford Community Arts & Crafts and I picked up your magazine at the George while attending Tideswell Cinema on Wednesday. BCAC is a registered charity run by volunteers. Our next event in Bamford features two local singing groups, one of which – Drowsy Sleepers – is led by Carol Bowns who, as you will know, is musical director of The Tideswell Singers. I thought the concert would consequently be of interest to Tideswell residents.I attach some copy and two photographs, which I hope you can put in the May issue and also, possibly, the June issue. If you can use only one photo, please use the black & white one of Drowsy Sleepers. Thanks very much.Cath AllwoodBCAC – bcac
